I have just watched the movie "the woman in black" and as a horror movie fan, i was not impressed. The movie lacked on so many dimensions that i felt like i was just staring at a black and white painting the whole time, and i was not very impressed.
The movie takes place in England. The movie has a prequel scene. The prequel scene is three girls playing with dolls. Then they suddenly stop and walk towards the window and jump. They die. Then the main plot of the movie starts. The main character is called Arthur. His wife has passed away and he lives with his child. He is a lawyer, and the movie get right to the point and lets you know that he is not a good one, because five minutes into the movie, Arthur's boss lets him know that if he does not sort the affairs of a recently deceased eccentric, he will be fired. So he goes to the town where the deceased lived. He meets a Mr.Bently, who he quickly befriends. Mr.Bently's son was killed when he was around six or so and his wife thinks that her son is still around and that she can channel him. The deceased lived far away from the town in a large mansion. almost an hour into the movie, you start to see that the towns people are keeping a dark secret from Arthur. No horror so far.
Then Arthur goes on to investigate the mansion, as he is doing that, he hears noises and it leads him to a window on the top floor where he looks out and finds a person in black far away, but nothing major happens, and by know i started to wonder if i will ever see anything scary in this movie. He goes back to the town and a young girl dies. The town's people blame Arthur for her death because he saw "the woman in Black"; no explanation is given. Mr. Bantly's wife proves that she can channel her son at the dinner table by drawing a hanged person on the table. I remember thinking to myself that she was drawing a picture that represented what is happening to the people that are watching the movie, but no, upon further inspection, it turned out that she drew the woman in black. Despite the town's people refusing him to drive back to the mansion, Arthur drives back. He again investigates and finds out that "the woman in black" is a psychopathic woman, who was declared insane and was not allowed to see her child. As she was away from her child, he was drowned in a muddy pond. His body was never uncovered. "the woman in black" blamed her husband and her sister for neglecting her son and promised to take revenge. She committed suicide after.
brief spoiler alerts from here on. I won't drag this long, so Arthur finds out later that the woman in black is after his child, and that he has to go get him from the train station where the had promised to meet and protect him from her. He somehow concludes on his way there that if he uncovers the body of the psychopathic woman's son, and gives it a proper burial, the woman in black will leave them alone. He and Mr.Bently go to the muddy pond and pull out the body and bury it inside the woman in black's coffin in a less that impressive sequence of scenes.
Arthur concludes that somehow "the woman in black is gone, but looki here, When he meets his son, he just neglects him and talk to Mr.Bantly, here i heard what i concluded was a comic relief. Mr.Bantly tells Arthur, "Are you sure you don't wanna spend the night here?". Like are you serious? is that even a question you ask in this situation? anyhow, under the influence of the woman in black, just like the three girls at the beginning of the movie, His son walks away from them and toward the train tracks, and when Arthur realizes this, he jumps to save his son.
The train passes by and when Arthur looks back to where Mr. Bantly was, he sees no one. And His son says to him, "who is that woman?". Arthur looks in the direction his kid is pointing out to and sees his deceased wife. He tells his son that it is his mom and the hold hands and walk away. The woman in black is shown after and she looks at the screen and the movie ends. I thought that she did Arthur a favor because he was depressed before his death, and he was happy after he met his wife. Maybe she was paying him back for digging out her sons body out of the muddy pond and placing it in her grave, but maybe i am reading too much into it.
All in all the movie was not a good horror movie. It lacked horror scenes and when there was horror, the elements where very week. The yelling of the ghosts was not loud enough and i could tell that i was watching a movie. The story line was week to say the least. I would recommend this for someone who has never watched a horror movie, and wants to get that first one out of the way, or someone who easily gets scared and wants to overcome those fears by watching horror movies; this movie will be a great start. As for hard core horror fans. You Should look elsewhere. All in all i give this movie a 5/10.
